Abstract:
Two Neolithic pits and four pits, along with a droveway and eight short stretches of ditch/gully dating to the Bronze Age period were identified. These Bronze Age remains appear to have formed part of a ditched-field system, significant as few have been recorded in Suffolk. Iron Age remains comprised two droveways and seven enclosures encompassing a series of circular ditches, pits and postholes indicative of extensive and continued settlement activity. This appeared to be relatively small scale during the earlier Iron Age, comprising just a single enclosure, before, developing and becoming more extensive throughout the Middle and Late Iron Age periods. Activity continued into the Roman period, represented by a series of recut ditches and pits running close to the north-western limit of excavation, moving to a rectilinear field system layout comprising two trackways and two rectilinear-enclosed areas interpreted as fields. A hiatus in occupation appears to have occurred during the Anglo-Saxon period, with only two pits dating to the Late Anglo-Saxon period identified. Medieval activity was situation along the western edge of the excavation area, comprising six rectangular enclosures encompassing pits, postholes, ovens, an animal burial, ditches and a stone-lined well. A large isolated pit containing eight animal burials was identified c . 75m east of the medieval activity. Post-medieval and modern features were identified, including a field boundary, pipe trench, extraction pit and a series of field drains.
