Abstract: |
A initisal single evaluation trench 20m long by 1.6m wide was excavated across the proposed site of the new build. The site initially suggested for the line of the trench was along the line of a large hedge, so the trench was moved slightly and opened as an L-shape. An archaeologist was on site when the cottage was dismantled, with the line of the walls being recorded. During the Watching Brief the main area of the new house was stripped back to the natural so that all features could be recorded and excavated prior to construction work. The Evaluation identified features, but provided very little dating evidence. The Watching Brief provided a broader explanation of the features that were identified across the site. These features probably extended in date from the later prehistoric period to the 20th century, although this activity was probably not continuous. In the Evaluation and Watching Brief it was apparent that there were a handful of features that appeared to be cut from below the soil horizon on which the surviving deposits of the Roman road were placed. None of these features contain any dating evidence, so due to the stratigraphic relationship of the features it is assumed that these could be later prehistoric or early Roman, but essentially they are not precisely dated. The line of a Roman road has been determined as running up over Savernake Forest. Where the feature is better preserved this has been scheduled. A flint stone spread was identified over an earlier soil horizon, which was highly disturbed but had to be the remains of the road. Also cut into the top of this deposit was a linear feature that appeared to be respected by earlier features located on the site. This was also considered to be Roman in date. A number of parallel features were identified that were considered to be ridge and furrow. The most significant features are associated with the palisade that marked the boundary of Luton Lye during the 17th and 18th century. The feature was dismantled at the turn of the 18th to 19th century. At this time the Forest was being laid out to a plan created by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, though this had to have been completed after his lifetime. The new boundaries on the map of c. 1820 are probably a result of this activity. The cottage or cottages that were constructed in this area were created in the Regency Era (1795-1837). This is evident by fixtures that were evident in the Cottages before they were dismantled. There are a series of activities that have been identified as being carried out in the grounds of this/these cottages from the time of their construction to the present day. |
