Abstract:
23 trenches (50m long and 1.8m wide) were excavated using a mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless ditching bucket under archaeological monitoring and hand excavation. Soil samples were taken for an archaeobotanical assessment by an environmental specialist. Ceramic Building Material was also assessed by a specialist. The evaluation trenching largely confirmed the results of previous geophysical survey, revealing linear agricultural features (ditches and furrows). A structure, possibly the foundations for a kiln, and associated pits were revealed in one trench that corresponded with results from the previous geophysical survey. Sampled bricks were dated by a specialist to late 18th - 19th Century (possibly 1784 - 1850). Bulk soil samples analysed by a specialist were found to contain several small charcoal fragments and evidence of modern bioturbation and cereal cropping.
