Abstract:
The evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of 107 trenches, each 50m in length and 2m in width, in the locations shown on the attached plans. The trenches were located to test geophysical anomalies and to provide a representative sample of the remainder of the site. The trenches were targeted on areas previously indicated as proposed for development. Following completion of the fieldwork, changes have been made to the development proposals to remove a proposed access track (targeted by Trenches 83-86) from the design (see Appendix E for design proposal). Between August and September 2022, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of land at Five Lanes, Malmesbury, Wiltshire. A total of 107 trenches were excavated. Archaeological features were identified across the site including ditches, pits, postholes, quarry pits, drains and evidence for ridge and furrow cultivation. For the most part, many of these features remained undated; however, evidence for prehistoric activity was recovered in the form of a small number of worked flints, and a significant artefactual assemblage dating to the Roman period, indicative of settlement, was recovered from a number of features associated with two large enclosures and associated features identified by a preceding geophysical survey. The evidence suggests that following the Roman occupation, the site largely remained in agricultural use.
