Series: Archaeological Consultancy Limited unpublished report series

Archaeological Consultancy Ltd was commissioned by Derek Coyle of First Step Homes Ltd to undertake an archaeological evaluation in advance of planning application for a proposed housing development on land off Atlantic Way (NGR SW 69998 48025). This fieldwork was undertaken between 20th and 23rd August 2012. One probable ditch was recorded. No further archaeological work is recommended for this project.

AC was commissioned by Charles Pugh to undertake an archaeological, ecological and structural assessment of Scott's Quay in advance of proposed consolidation works to the Upper Quay. A brief setting out the requirements of the assessment was provided by Natural England (NE) and The Historic Environment Service, Cornwall Council (HES), reflecting the ecological and archaeological sensitivity of the site and its inclusion in the Goongillings Farm Higher Stewardship Scheme holding. Scott's Quay is at the southern tip of Goongillings Farm (SW 7379 2728) at the convergence of the Polpenwith and Polwheveral Creeks, in the upper reaches of the Helford Estuary. The assessment was undertaken between January and August 2012, it recorded: -The 19th Century access track leading from Goongillings Farm to the Quay -The 19th Century Lower Quay built by Charles Scott to service the mining and quarrying industries -Two quarries associated with the c19th century Quay -The Upper Quay -The intertidal and terrestrial habitats and related legislative constraints -The structural failing of significant parts of the Upper Quay The assessment recommended limited consolidation works to maximise the longevity and appreciation of the Quay without reducing the historic integrity of the structure or incurring major additional planning considerations and costs. Consolidation works included: -Underpinning the western quay wall -Recovery and reuse of tumbled coping stones and gate post -Rebuilding modern, poorly repaired walling, reinstating the running bond and a landward batter -Excavation of non-draining clayey-silts and backfill with granite chippings behind the walling -Reinstatement of surface with stockpiled soil, consolidating turf and seeded geotextile An archaeological watching brief of the consolidation works did not identify any significant additional archaeological findings.

Archaeological Consultancy Ltd was commissioned by Diane and Gregory Bennett to undertake historic and archaeological recording in advance of the conversion of the cottage for holiday accommodation. The recording was required as a condition of the planning permission for the proposed conversion. The Cottage is located 1 kilometre east of Truro at the edge of the Pencalenick Estate at SW 84976 45473 (NGR) (Figure 1). The fieldwork was undertaken in July and August, it recorded the extant internal and external elevations of the late 19th Century cottage, probably first occupied by Thomas Tapper, Gamekeeper of Pencalenick Estate.

The geophysical survey carried out over 1ha of land at Higher Polsue Way, Tresillian, Cornwall has identified several linear positive anomalies that probably relate to former field boundaries. High amplitude positive area anomalies are also apparent across the site that are difficult to interpret but may be associated with cut features of an archaeological origin. Several lower amplitude linear and area anomalies are also observed that are more likely to be archaeological or agricultural in origin. None of the recorded abnormalities appeared to relate to the mound previously identified on aerial photographs. Caution should be taken during any intrusive work as the background noise of the site has made it difficult to identify weak features within the survey area.

AC Ltd was commissioned by Steve Hooper of CAD Architects on behalf of Tom and Katrina Barnicoat to undertake archaeological recording on works associated with the construction of a garden room and swimming pool. The recording was required as a condition of planning permission for the proposed development. This fieldwork was undertaken on the 20th and 21st March, it recorded: Two parallel ditches with a probable bank between them.

AC Ltd was commissioned by David and Paula Jump to undertake archaeological recording in advance and alongside works associated with the conversion of Holy Trinity Church to a dwelling. The recording was required as a condition of planning permission and listed building consent for the proposed development. The archaeological recording principally consisted of historic building recording in advance of conversion and a watching brief of relevant conversion works. This site (NGR SX 18019 76545) is designated as a Grade II Listed building. The historic building recording was undertaken on the 22nd August, it recorded: The 19th Century Church. Internal and external fixtures, fittings and features including grave stones and stained glass associated with the church and its later refurbishments. The watching brief recorded a series of sleeper walls beneath the existing floor of the church.

AC Ltd was commissioned by Simon Burgess of Poynton Bradbury Wynter Cole Architects Ltd on behalf of Montgomery Property Group to undertake an archaeological assessment in advance of works associated with the construction of a business park. The site is located at SW 5754 3868 (NGR). This fieldwork was undertaken in July 2013, it assessed: -The location of the business park, in which no archaeological remains were discernable. -The surrounding World Heritage Sites, Scheduled Monuments, Listed Buildings and other undesignated sites. -The intervisibility and other possible effects of the business park upon the designated and undesignated sites. The site is not considered to have high potential for any significant surviving archaeological deposits and no further archaeological work is recommended for it.

AC was commissioned by Jonathan Born to undertake photographic recording in advance of the conversion of two barns into holiday lets at Nancegollan Farm (SW 63955 32556). The photographic recording was required as a condition of listed building consent for the proposed conversion as the barns are grade II listed (No. 65875). This fieldwork was undertaken on 18th August 2010, it recorded: -The extant internal and external elevations of the barns which appear to be predominantly 19th Century. -The internal fixtures of the barns including two cobbled floors.

AC Ltd was commissioned by Daniel Conley of Plymouth University to undertake an archaeological assessment of the site of a proposed temporary radar station at Perranporth Airfield (NGR SW 74090 53220), in accordance with a brief provided by Daniel Ratcliffe, Historic Environment Advisor (Archaeology), to facilitate appropriate planning decisions. The proposed temporary radar station, forms part of scheduled monument 32957: World War II Fighter Pens and Defences part of RAF Perranporth and also includes part of the St Agnes Mining District of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. The airfield also sits within a rich mosaic of historic landscapes with significant timedepth (Ratcliffe p1). The assessment recorded a number of sites in the proposed development area principally associated with post-medieval mining and the World War II airfield, RAF Perranporth, though a number of prehistoric barrows have also been recorded in the vicinity. With slight changes to the proposed layout (specified in recommendations), the proposed development is likely to have little impact on the identified sites on completion of the project. A watching brief of the electric trench should allow for appropriate archaeological management of additional sites in this area.

AC Ltd was commissioned by Chloe Bines of Migrid to undertake an archaeological assessment of the site of a proposed wind turbine at Goodern Manor (NGR SW 78455 43195; Figure 1) to accompany the planning application in line with pre-application advice received from Cornwall Council. The proposed wind turbine site is located within the Cornwall Mining World Heritage Site and within a rich prehistoric and historic landscape that includes a number of Scheduled Monuments and Listed Buildings. The proposed development is likely to have minimal impact on the identified sites, the most pertinent being the visual impact of the turbine on the World Heritage Site (Site 69) during the use phase and the audible and other impacts on Goodern Manor Farm (Sites 36 and 37). A watching brief of subsurface works would appropriately mitigate for any subsurface impact. Given the implementation of the recommendations set out in this report it may be considered that the substantial positive impact of green energy production and the dissemination of the archaeological results appropriately offset the minor negative impacts identified.
