A Watching Brief at Woodland Road Ivybridge

Between the 8th December 2015 and 6th January 2016 Peninsula Archaeology carried out a watching brief during topsoil stripping at the site off Woodland Road, Ivybridge. The development was for the construction of two dwelling with associated hard standing for off road parking. The site is adjacent to a group of 4 listed building that include the former Woodland manor house, part of which are thought to date from the 16th or 17th century.

An area measuring approximately 22.5m from east to west and 21m from north to south of the sloping field had been graded to create a level play area. To level the field the northern portion (approximately 13m) had been excavated to a maximum of 1.2m below ground level; the area beyond this to the south had been built up using the spoil from the excavated area. The whole area had been seeded and new grass had grown, therefore no archaeological remains were visible. There were no spoil heaps but the construction team had collected a small number of modern glass bottles which are in the possession of the school.

Groundworks for a new coffee shop were conducted at Plymouth Garden Centre, located within Bowden Battery, a Victorian fotificaction on the outskirts of Plymouth. Apart from locating the surface of the parade ground no archaeological deposits or finds were recovered

REPORT OF A TRIAL EXCAVATION AT OLD CAWTE FARM, DUNSFORD , DEVON.

Removal of the turf and subsoil revealed the natural bed rock approximately 23 cms below the modern ground surface. A linear feature was located running N-S across the length of the trench into which the roots of the adjacent pear tree had penetrated. On excavation of 20% of this feature, it proved to be the edge of a terrace which had been cut when the original extension to the house had been constructed. All the pottery finds were post 1800 suggesting that the terracing had taken place at some time in the later 19th or early 20th century, before the planting of the pear tree.

A watching brief was maintained while topsoil; was stripped from an area of approx 16 m2. No finds were recovered from the topsoil except modern ceramics and there were no features obseved cut into the subsoil.

Watching Brief at 41 Fore St Tones

A watching brief was conducted at the site during ground works associated with construction of a rear extension. A substantial assemblage of local and imported post Medieval pottery had been found during similar work on an adjacent property. On this occasion no similar finds were made
