Faunal studies on urban sites: the animal bones from Exeter, 1971-5
Mark J M Maltby
The material studied comes from Roman and medieval deposits in Exeter, and is presented in terms of species exploited (including fish remains analysed by M Wilkinson). Exeter's role in animal husbandry is discussed under the headings of meat production, dairying, wool production, marketing of hides and furs, working animals, tools and ornaments, butchery and meat marketing, the urban population and animal husbandry. Future research priorities are outlined.

The legionary bath-house and basilica and forum at Exe of the legionary fortress
Paul T Bidwell
et multi alii
The introductory section describes the Neronian and early Flavian legionary fortress of Leg II Augusta, partly explored in recent excavations, and reinterprets some relevant earlier evidence. Most of the report deals with the Cathedral Close excavations 1971-7 of parts of the legionary baths built c 60-5. These were replaced c 80 by the basilica and forum, which underwent three partial reconstructions, the last dated to c 340/50. By mid 5th century the site had been cleared of buildings and was in use as an Early Christian cemetery. Many specialist reports: Purbeck marble mouldings, mosaic, coins, samian, colour-coated and coarse wares, glass, small finds, and some skeletons.
