An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during development work on the site which lay in close proximity to the site of the medieval Thirsk Castle, of which only earthworks survived. Piles were being inserted into an area of soft ground that had been identified during a previous evaluation. The watching brief uncovered more of this soft ground, which whilst it contained no archaeological dating evidence, was presumed to be a large moat which had belonged to the castle. [AIP]

A watching brief was carried out at Catterick Racecourse due to the proximity to the Roman town of Cataractonium. The archaeological assessment did not however turn up any evidence for previous activity in the immediate area of the proposed development. [AIP]

The watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of a 2.5m square hole that was needed in order to plant a tree. The excavations revealed that the site was previously occupied by a building with a vaulted cellar. Although no finds were recovered, the bricks provided an estimation of the 18th century for the origins of the building. [AIP]

A series of watching briefs were maintained during water mains improvement works within the historic core of Selby. The work produced evidence of archaeological deposits of some significance. In Micklegate the potential for waterlogged organic deposits in undisturbed areas was noted, although the extent of these was unknown. Church Hill also produced waterlogged deposits and some evidence of structural remains, although the nature of these could not be fully explored. A pit dug in Abbey Place proved the existence of at least one burial outside the existing churchyard and beyond the limits of a Cholera Burial Ground which lay in the vicinity. Taken together, the results showed a high potential for archaeological investigation in a number of streets in the historic core of the town, and provided the groundwork for targetting future archaeological work. The watching brief did not turn up any features of archaeological significance. The few finds of medieval date to suggest that the area was in use in the medieval period, and the buried ploughsoil suggested an agricultural use.[Au]
