Megalithic graves and ritual: papers presented to the III Atlantic Colloquium, Moesgård 1969
S Piggott (pp 9-15) reviews general problems of interpreting megalithic structures. K Jadewski (63-74) reviews the relationships between Polish Kujavian barrows and the unchambered tombs of NW Europe. The Danish Late TRB ritual houses are dissociated by C J Becher (75-9) from funeral rites. Re-examination of the Clyde-Carlingford tombs by A E P Collins (93-103) leads him to argue for influence from Lincs-Yorks rather than from France. John Corcoran (105-16) sees in the Carlingford Cairns a fusion of the portal dolmen tradition with that of the trapezoidal cairn. The Clyde Cairns are thought by J G Scott (117-28) to show Irish influence, both direct and indirect, with the four Loch Fyneside cairns providing crucial evidence. Comparisons between Irish Sea and Scandinavian passage graves and their artefacts are made by M Herity (129-35), and eight seasons' work at Newgrange are described by M J O'Kelly (137-46). F Lynch (147-61) considers the possibility of "oracular" use of some passage graves, and the techniques of Irish passage grave art are discussed by Elizabeth Shee (163-72). P-R Giot (197-201) discusses Barnenez, and J L'Helgouach (203-19) finds it difficult to uphold theories of dual megalithic colonisation in Armorica. A general survey of V-perforated buttons in Europe is provided by J Arnal (221-6), and other contributions come from J A Bakker and J D van der Waals, Ulrich Fischer, and Marta Stromberg. See abstract 75/2976 for H Case on Goodland. For review, see Antiquity, 48, 1974, 322-3.
