The reprinted articles are presented in half a dozen sections: command and structure of the army, military diplomas as historical sources, new and reassessed inscriptions, and the character of the army on the Danube, in Germany, and in Spain respectively. Included is 'Ein praefectus der cohors VI Nerviorum in Britannia' (223-7), on L VINICIVS PIVS who is attested at Brough-by-Bainbridge (Yorks) in AD 205; this 1969 paper is brought up to date by noting slightly revised readings by A Birley.

The paper on 'Die römische Dobrudscha und das römische Britannien' (220-8) discusses ?(Capitonius) Priscus, prefect of Coh I Aquitanorum at Brough-on-Noe and tribune of Coh I Cilicum on the ?Danube.
