The Birsay Bay Project volume 1. Coastal sites beside the Brough Road, Birsay, Orkney: excavations 1976-1982
Christopher D Morris
Excavations, new and old, cover the period Late Neo/BA to the Vikings. F T Wainwright's excavations at the Point of Buckquoy produced quantities of environmental evidence, now analysed, for this Neo-BA site. The sites South of Red Craig included long cists of Roman Iron Age/Pictish date with Viking middens over, and three Viking period graves. Red Craig had a figure-of-eight shaped domestic building probably of Pictish date, but with several phases. Exploration is made of the historical background to the Project and of the geological, topographical, place-name, and biological evidence from the Bay area, including fishbones, red deer bones, human skeletal remains, and botanical material.
