Object and economy in medieval Winchester (Artefacts from medieval Winchester part ii)
Martin Biddle
Ian H Goodall
David A Hinton
et 81 al
The two volumes catalogue and discuss some 6600 objects, AS to postmed, from the 1961-71 excavation seasons. Main sections are: the finds and their publication (covering the process of post-excavation); and industries and their tools (the gold, silver, lead, copper alloy, iron, and textile industries, tanning and leatherwork, bone/antler, wood, stone, building tools, etc). Objects are classified by function - personal possessions, devotional equipment and furnishings, horsegear, weapons and armour, etc. The volume throws much new light on the economy of a medieval city and on processes such as textile manufacture, wire-drawing, and pin manufacture, and on the beginnings of window-glass production and of glass painting.
