Early Medieval sculpture in the West Highlands and Islands
I Fisher
This volume presents in concise form the results of two extensive surveys, covering over 150 sites. Material from the Royal Commission's Inventory of Argyll is presented in abbreviated but updated form in the second part of the Gazetteer. The first part of the Gazetteer covers the remainder of the West Highlands, the Hebrides and the Clyde islands. Most of these carved stones belong to the period between the introduction of Christianity to Western Scotland in the sixth century and the arrival of new monastic orders and an organised parochial system in the late-twelfth century. Connections with the art of other areas of Britain and Ireland are also discussed and illustrated.
