Account of the history and archaeology of the medieval Buckton Castle, one of the earliest stone castles in North West England. Study which looks at the late medieval Newton Hall and its place within the cruck-framed building tradition of the region, providing an overview of the development of the site and its regional importance. Gives a detailed account of the restoration of the hall in the late 1960s. Describes the findings of excavations in 2008 investigating the courtyard complex associated with the hall, and looks at evidence from the excavation of other cruck buildings within the Manchester region. Study of St Lawrence's Church in Denton, Tameside, one of twenty-nine surviving medieval timber-framed chapels and churches in England and Wales. The churches and chapels form four main concentrations, centred on Cheshire, Essex, Hampshire, and Hereford and Worcester, of which the Cheshire group of fifteen churches is the largest. St Lawrence's was the last of these timber-framed chapels to be built, being erected in the 1530s. Following an overview of the timber-framed churches of England and Wales, the authors give a brief history of St Lawrence's before describing its archaeology, the revival of interest in timber-framed churches during the nineteenth century, and recent restoration works. The study concludes with a gazetteer of surviving pre-Reformation timber-framed chapels and churches in England and Wales, a glossary, and a list of recommended churches to visit.

Study of St Michael and All Angels, Ashton-under-Lyne, and St Michael and All Angels, Mottram-in-Longdendale, two of 116 surviving medieval parish churches in North West England. The archaeology and history of medieval parish churches is outlined, and the survival of church fabric from this period in the region is discussed. Histories are given of the two St Michaels of the title, followed by a summary of post-1541 religious buildings in Tameside. The book ends with a gazetteer of the surviving medieval parish churches of Lancashire and Cheshire (pre-1974 county areas). LD
