Excavations in the fishing town of Eyemouth: a report on the archaeological excavations in the Burgh of Eyemouth 1982-4
Piers J Dixon
The site was essentially a foreshore midden used c 1180-1450 for the disposal of fish-processing waste and also of refuse from the village. A girl of about 15 had been buried under the late med dune at the N end. The land was eventually reclaimed with the aid of a revetment wall. Further dumping was followed by a late 19th century brick tenement. Environmental material yielded much information, in particular demonstrating that beech was an exotic introduction, though well established by 1683/4. Meat and fish remains, and finds of metalwork and pottery from the midden, demonstrate the town's economy.
