Excavations in Bath, 1950-75
Puts on record the previously unpublished results of rescue excavations and observations made in Bath and its immediate environs over twenty-five years. The material includes an Iron Age (Glastonbury ware etc) assemblage from Sion Hill; the range of Roman occupation is from Claudius to 5th century. Early and middle Saxon structures are lacking, but there is good quality Saxo-Norman pottery and the monastery is of 10th-11th century date. Medieval structures have been excavated and a medieval pottery sequence is being constructed, in spite of much post-medieval destruction. Clay pipes and pottery of the post-medieval period are included, and there is discussion of ceramic animal roof-finials. Contributors: G C Dunning, J Gardner, J P Greene, M Owen, W Rodwell, W Startin, and W J Wedlake.
