An archaeological survey of the river gravels: the Upper Thames Valley in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire
Roger H Leech
Gazetteer produced uniformly with those of Oxfordshire and Berkshire, listing known sites (cropmarks, excavations etc) from Cirencester to Lechlade, giving case studies of certain areas, assessing the archaeological potential of the area, and making recommendations for the recording of those sites due to be destroyed by still further gravel extraction.

Archaeological sites in the Avon and Gloucestershire Cotswolds: an extensive survey of a rural archaeological resource with special reference to plough damage
Alan Saville
The location and condition of 906 sites, ranging in date from 4000 BC to AD 1500, which constitute a major part of the Cotswold region's archaeological resource, are described and analysed. Plough-damage to rural sites, particularly those of prehistoric and Romano-British date, is shown to be serious, not even scheduled sites having escaped damage. Recommendations are made for the preservation and excavation of specific sites and a research programme is outlined. Au(adp)

Historic towns in Gloucestershire: archaeology and planning
Appraises past and present research into the archaeology and early history of 24 towns, and indicates where future work should be concentrated (excavations, vernacular urban architecture, the surveying of individual remains, and much more documentary research). Some failed boroughs are included, and towns which developed very late are excluded. For each town an 'early features' map and a 'state of development' map is included.

Historic towns in Somerset
Mick A Aston
Roger H Leech
This report on thirty-four towns will assist in the definition of archaeological priorities and in the preparation of planning and environmental schemes. As well as the Saxon and medieval borough foundations the report includes the Roman town of Ilchester and some of the failed boroughs; for each town the information consists of historical summaries, topographical information and any archaeological data.
