Distinctive Features

The overall form is quite similar to the Augst 33 / Fréjus-Lenzburg amphora. It has a thickened rim and a cylindrical neck, while the handles are grooved, and the body is ovoid and the base flat.

Minimum height:76cm at Nyon (Martin-Kilcher, 1994).

From the Flavian period to the second century AD (Martin-Kilcher, 1994; Baudoux, 1996).

Origin

Macroscopic and chemical analysis places the production in Fréjus (Brentchaloff, 1988; Brentchaloff & Picon, 1990; Sciallano & Sibella, 1991; Laubenheimer, 1992).

Augst, Nyon, Lenzburg, Vindonissa, Wiesbaden, southern France.

Contents

Fish sauce. Examples found at Vindonissa bore the tituli picti MVR(iae) F(los) (Martin-Kilcher, 1994).

Capacity is around 40-45 litres. Tituli picti from Nyon give an indication of capacity, M(odii) IIII SE(xtarii) VIII (Martin-Kilcher, 1994).
