The Naze Tower was built by Trinity House in 1721, as a day mark for navigation, before lighthouses were common. It still serves this function today for traffic approaching Harwich. Since its construction the tower has served as a Georgian tea room, an army lookout post, navy signalling point, RAF radar installation and telephone relay station. Today it is once again a tea room and tourist attraction (www.hometown.aol.co.uk).
