The hamlet of Pin Mill is situated on the south bank of the Orwell. It is a popular sailing point, with a history of sailors and smugglers. Boat building and barge repairing were once its life blood (Edwards 1991, 18). Today the 17th century "Butt & Oyster" inn is still situated on the river bank. The hamlet was the setting for Arthur Ransome's book "We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea".
