Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report Abstract:	Groby Old Hall is a grade II* listed building located on the north side of Markfield Road, Groby, Leicestershire, at National Grid Reference SK 5239 0759. This multi-period building occupies a site approximately 2 acres (c. 0.8 hectares) in area, within which are the Scheduled remains of a motte and bailey castle and medieval manorial complex (National Monument Number 17066). The earliest elements of Groby Old Hall are two brick-built towers and other associated brickwork, representing the remains of an unfinished gatehouse, begun by Thomas Grey, first marquis of Dorset, between c.1488 and 1492. Later in the 1490s Grey started work on a new brick house at Bradgate and the gatehouse at Groby was never finished. The hall and cross-wing forming the core the Old Hall are probably 16th century. A smoke-blackened 15th century roof truss over the hall appears to be reused and there is other reused timber and masonry, deriving from the demolished medieval manor house. Further additions and alterations have been made to the Old Hall in all subsequent centuries. Investigation by Time Team in April 2010 clarified the location and chronology of the medieval manor house and chapel. This consisted of four substantial ranges on a courtyard plan, lying immediately to the NW of the Old Hall, between this and the Church of St Philip and St James. The chronology of the Old Hall presented in this Assessment Report has subsequently been revised slightly in light of the 2010 investigations.
