Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken by ARCUS in 2008 for the proposed new A57(T) road improvement scheme from Junction 31 on the M1 Junction to the east of Todwick crossroads. In 2011, ArcHeritage were commissioned to carry out an aerial photographic assessment to supplement the desk-based assessment. A number of archaeological sites have been located that were not identified by previous reports and sites dating from the medieval, post-medieval and modern periods have the potential to be impacted by the proposed new route. Some sites will be affected directly, such as the site of Grange Lodge, while in other cases, the settings of listed structures will be affected. Changes to baseline conditions, including the loss of the metal plaque associated with the Grade II listed milestone to the east of the entrance to Todwick Grange, have also occurred since the production of the 2001 report. These changes may affect potential mitigation strategies for sections of the route. Cropmark remains of palaeochannels and fragmentary field systems and enclosures, possibly of Iron Age to Romano-British date, have been recorded within 1km of the road scheme, suggesting that there is the potential for similar remains within the proposed road corridor. The potential for sub-surface archaeology, as well as the known sites, indicates that a variety of archaeological mitigation measures may be required. An appropriate scheme of archaeological evaluation and mitigation should be agreed with the South Yorkshire Archaeology Service prior to groundworks taking place. |
