Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology in June 2013 at Castle Drogo, Devon (SX 7219 0900). The site lies immediately to the south and east of Castle Drogo, a Grade I listed building. The Tithe map (c 1840) indicates that the site was marginal grazing land on the upper slopes of the steep valley of the River Teign, with an area of woodland north of the river, and an area of poor pasture along the valley. The 1st and 2nd edition OS maps (1885 and 1906) show that the site remained substantially unchanged when it was acquired by Julius Drewe in 1910. Progress on the building was delayed by the outbreak of war in 1914, and it was finally completed in its present form in 1930. A watching brief was maintained during works associated with the erection of scaffolding. 113 bases ranging in size from 4m x 2m x 250mm deep to 450mm x 200mm x 100m deep were excavated. No evidence for archaeological activity has been exposed within the scaffold bases and loading bay. A major contributory factor for this has been the shallow nature of the groundworks. |
