Introduction
In order to characterise the archaeological potential of land to the rear of 54 Castle Street, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the developers to undertake an archaeological field evaluation. The archaeological evaluation revealed a considerable depth of overburden in both trenches, some of which may have been imported to level the site following the demolition of the buildings that formerly bounded the site.
A modern brick wall, sitting on a concrete foundation, was encountered in Trench 2. This appeared to act as a boundary between a more disturbed area to the west and a less disturbed area to the east. Boundary walls are shown in the north-eastern corner of the site on mid to late 20th century mapping and it is probable that this feature relates to one of these.
Two undated linear features were observed in Trench 2, in the north-eastern corner of the site. They were cut by the wall, but no dating evidence was recovered from their fills. These have been interpreted as possible boundary or garden features, but it was not possible to investigate them owing to considerations of safe access. No other archaeological features, deposits or finds were revealed in the course of the work. On the basis of the results of the evaluation, the risk that the proposed development might disturb archaeological features and deposits may be considered to be High, but it was not possible to determine the nature and date of the features encountered and hence their significance.
