Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Introduction

Park Wood Cottage, ARC PWC 99

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Union Railways (South) Limited to carry out an archaeological evaluation of a site at Park Wood Cottage. The evaluation area was situated to the east of Station Road and alongside the Ashford to Folkestone railway, near the village of Mersham (centred on TR 06820 38475). The site is known as Park Wood Cottage (site code ARC PWC99). The evaluation comprised eight 30m x 1.8m evaluation trenches within an area totalling 0.8 hectares, and was carried out between the 26th and 30th of April 1999.

Previous Channel Tunnel Rail Link phase 1 work in the area (an Archaeological Evaluation (ARC LSF 98) and Excavation (ARC LSF 99) at Little Stock Farm) had revealed a complex arrangement of archaeological features, predominantly located to the west of Station Road, which had been dated as Late Bronze Age and Late Iron Age, both phases apparently focussing on subrectangular settlement enclosures.

The evaluation has revealed a total of 17 archaeological features, including ditches and pits, distributed throughout the evaluation area. Dating evidence suggests that the features in this area represent Late Iron Age/ Early Romano-British, medieval and modern remains, with the pre-modern remains considered indicative of field systems as opposed to settlement remains.

N.B. Much of this work here has been superseeded by works associated with the Phase Two and Schemewide programmes, but are included here for completeness. Those wishing to use the most current data are urged to view the Channel Tunnel Rail Link Section 1 Project pages.
