Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Full Record - Hay-on-Wye, The Three Tuns, Broad Street, South end

LocationHay-on-Wye, The Three Tuns, Broad Street, South end, Breconshire
Grid referenceSO 2294 4254
DescriptionA lobby-entry house with large central chimney at the north end of Hay-on-Wye, probably built just outside the town wall. Regarded as the oldest house in Hay, tree-ring dating has established the complexity of the building chronology. The earliest phase is represented by a single, smoke-blackened cruck-truss with lapped collar and (removed) tiebeam, which was sampled but did not date. The mid-/later sixteenth-century post-and-panel partition divides the outer bay but relates to the fireplace and probably dates the insertion of the chimney. In a third phase of rebuilding/reconstruction the upper parlour was modernised with, at the entry, a shaped doorhead with ogee detail; a rear dog-leg stair with splat balusters was constructed, and much of the first-floor framing was renewed giving a twin-gabled front elevation. Noted in "Houses of Breconshire II", Brycheiniog X (1964): 154, pl. XVIIIA. NPRN 16259.
