Abstract: |
The evaluation recorded a distinctive layer of dark reddish-brown clayey silt, which filled a number of features of potential archaeological significance at the northern end of the site, and, to a lesser degree, the southern end. The features were interpreted as possible ditch, pit and post holes. Few of the features contained any finds or inclusions of archaeological significance, but the recovery of a small assemblage of undiagnostic flint and prehistoric pottery from the reddish-brown soil layer suggested the possibility that they may have been Neolithic or Early Bronze Age in origin. Other features recorded were interpreted as variations in the natural geology, evidence of post-medieval agricultural activity and remains associated with the use of the site as a Second World War airfield and modern industrial estate.
