Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks for a small private swimming pool at a site which lay within the historic core of Cuckfield. A two-storey building had previousy stood on the site, which formed part of the garden and curtilage of Marshalls at the time of the watching brief. Trial trenches excavated at the proposal site had revealed that the eastern half of the former brick building had been set upon footings of local sandstone blocks. Medieval features had been recorded both within and outside the sandstone footings. During the watching brief, no trace of the medieval features observed earlier was seen, although a possible linear feature containing 13th-14th century pottery was recorded. A number of features of 18th and 19th century date, including a pit containing 19th century rubbish and two post-holes, were observed. The sandstone foundations were found to have related to a later post-medieval phase of activity, probably earlier than the brick building although not significantly so. No significant evidence was recovered to prove or disprove the hypothesis that medieval building remains were present, although, given the lack of general building debris of the period, this seemed unlikely.
