Abstract: |
Desk-based assessement of the proposed site of a residential development identified that ony four sites of archaeological interest had been recorded in the surrounding area. These comprised the findspot of a Neolithic axe, the pedestal of a medieval cross which was adjoined by an 18th century lock-up, the remains of a college which had been founded in 1431, and the collegiate church which had been rebuilt in 1431 but which possessed a 14th century tower. Part of the proposal site lay within a Conservation Area. A large proportion of the site had escaped development to an extent where any archaeological evidence which may have existed would have been destroyed. It was concluded that the archaeological potential of the site was uncertain, and that an evaluation by trial trenching should be carried out. [AIP] |
