Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of pits for foundations and services at a development site, which lay within a designated area of High Archaeological Potential. Investiations nearby had indicated a high level of medieval activity along the High Street frontage, and the surrounding area was well known for prehistoric activity. Evaluation of the proposal site had revealed archaeological remains, including post-medieval features and a Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pit containing four sherds of pottery, burnt flint and two Mesolithic or Early Neolithic flint cores. During the watching brief, layers of post-medieval and modern made ground were observed, beneath which lay subsoil and natural deposits, into which prehistoric features had been cut. The more southerly area of the site was noted for a boundary which had commenced as a ditch before being infilled and later defined as a bank with associated hurdle fencing in the Iron Age. To the south-east of the bank were occasional stake-holes and the remnants of a linear feature, whilst to the north-west were more substantial features. These included a line of stake-holes along the top of a minor natural channel separating this area from that further north, two pits and a double row of stake-holes forming an arc, which possibly represented a circular structure with an internal diameter of c. 2.5m. No remains of medieval activity were observed during an earlier watching brief undertaken during alterations to the buildings fronting the High Srteet. [Au(adp)]
