Abstract:
The archaeological remains investigated represented a probable prehistoric unenclosed settlement. Sub-circular and rectangular buildings, concentrated in Area B; small sub-square 'four-post' type buildings, identified only within Area C; two-post structures, pairs of usually similar post holes, present in both excavation areas; possible fencelines and finally groupings of pits were observed. The distribution of these settlement elements appeared to be more than coincidental suggesting that there was a degree of organisation in the layout. Surprisingly, only a small number of artefacts were recovered including a handful of struck flint and one sherd of pottery. This was particularly unusual especially considering the presence of charred plant material, burnt stone and fired clay in several of the feature fills. It was hoped that fuller analysis of the data would reveal patterns in the distribution of the occupational debris and that radiocarbon dating would assign the settlement to a chronological period.
