Abstract:
The assessment for Gresham Palace was prepared to accompany a prospective application for planning consent to redevelop the area. The site was not within a Conservation area, nor did it include any Listed Buildings or Scheduled Ancient Monuments. All of the properties had previously been the subject of archaeological investigations and the archaeology of the area was exceptionally well documented. Remains of streets and houses of Roman date (especially from AD 60-160) were known to have survived, as were medieval pits and cellars (especially from AD 875-1400). Modern basements had generally cut down to Roman levels, with approximately 1 metre depth of archaeology surviving beneath such basements, while a double basement along Gresham Street was likely to have destroyed all but the lower parts of deeply cut wells. Archaeological levels were also pierced by pad and pile foundations. Mumford Court and Russia Court may have had deeper surviving archaeological sequences, possibly with some survival of alleyway surfaces to modern ground level. It was concluded that sufficient information was probably available for any planning application to be determined without the need for further field evaluation. [Au(adp)]
