Abstract: The pipeline route passed along the edge of Anciently Enclosed Land and Predominently Industrial Land, the latter being part of the former Camborne-Redruth mining district. Mineral extraction in this area had a long history, with mines documented from the 18th century. The Red River Valley was also a source of alluvial tin and it was likely that extraction occurred here from at least the medieval period. There were no known prehistoric sites along the pipeline corridor but prehistoric activity from at least the Neolithic period was indicated by the fortified enclosure on Carn Brea. Carn Brea also had hut circles, probably of Iron Age date. Later prehistoric pottery had also been recovered from the former farmland along the route; the accumulated information pointed to a lowland landscape that may have been intensively farmed during prehistory. Place-name evidence indicated that many of the major settlements in the area were in existence by the 14th century. Although many names refered to topographical features, two of the settlements, Trevenson and Tregajorran, probably had pre-Norman Conquest origins. The proposed pipeline passed through parts of four major historic mining complxes: Dolcoath, Cook's Kitchen, Tincroft and Carn Brea Mines. All these mines were working extensive tin and copper lodes running through the mineralised zone to the north of Carn Brea. As well as the surviving shafts, adits, buildings and leats of these documented workings, it was likely that earlier undocumented workings may have also been present below the surface. [Au]
