Abstract:
<summary>East Midlands Electricity applied, on behalf of themselves and British Gas (West Midlands), for Scheduled Monument Consent to lay an electricity cable and a gas pipe through the footpath on the south side of Marton Bridge (Scheduled Ancient Monument, Warwickshire No 30). The current bridge dates from 1414, although it seems that very little of that structure still survives. SMC was granted by the Secretary of State for the Environment subject to three conditions, one of which stated that any ground disturbance works should be supervised by the County Field Archaeologist (Warwickshire) or her representative. A trench c500mm wide and up to c600mm deep was dug along the whole length of the bridge. Immediately over the western arch the top of a limestone block was noted, and, although there was not enough of this visible to make a firm identification, it is most likely that this represented part of the fabric of the most recent rebuilding of the bridge (1661). In the vicinity of the eastern flood arch, a band of concrete lay against a wide rubble layer, 560mm below the top of the modern tarmac and extending 2.64 metres out from the southern parapet. This may represent repair work carried out at the time of the 1928 bridge widening. {italon}Au(adp){italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} WA3151
