Abstract: |
[MONUMENTS field, continued: RECTANGULAR ENCLOSURE / DITCHED ì\nENCLOSURE.]\n\n(At Site C, to the east of Marsh Farm, Salford Priors, five areas\n(C1-C5) were excavated on behalf of the Department of Transport. ì\nEvaluation work carried out on the proposed route of the A435 ì\nNorton Lenchwick Bypass had identified three areas of particular ì\nsignificance within the road corridor along the eastern side of a ì\ncropmark complex (WA 1499) [see AIP record C.80.0003].)\n\nAt the south end of Site C, Area C4 comprised a series of ì\ntrenches excavated through a large enclosure cropmark. The ì\ntrenches revealed a large curving ditch with a very clayey fill ì\nbut containing no prehistoric material at all. Fragments of Roman ì\ntile were recovered from the bottom fills, although their abraded ì\ncondition suggested that they were residual. Areas C1-C3 ran ì\nalong the edge of a Roman villa complex. Area C1 contained a ì\nsub-rectangular ditched enclosure measuring some 18m x 15m; a ì\nshort length of gully aligned with three parallel rows of post ì\nholes represented an internal structure. A second sub-rectangular ì\nenclosure on the northern side might have been a livestock yard. ì\nIn the northern part of Area C1, a number of shallow field ì\nboundary gullies were cut by a succession of deep east to west ì\nditches that aligned with the cropmark complex to the west. To ì\nthe south, in Area C2, a stone building that had not been ì\ndetected in the evaluation was investigated; it had probably been ì\naisled in plan. North of the building there was a series of ì\nenclosure ditches, also on an east to west alignment. Another ì\nbetter preserved stone building (15m x 7m) was uncovered in Area ì\nC3 to the north of Area C1. The footings of a central partition ì\ndivided the building into two, each half apparently with a ì\nseparate function. The remains of a T-shaped corn drier were ì\nuncovered under the western half of the building. To the south, a ì\nlarge barn-like structure was represented by linear arrangements ì\nof post holes. The remainder of the area was divided into ì\neast-west aligned rectangular enclosures. Area C5 was located ì\nadjacent to a large rectangular enclosure cropmark, some 280m ì\nnorth of Area C3. The eastern arm of the rectangular enclosure ì\nditch was uncovered on the western edge of the area. It had a ì\nV-shaped profile with very sandy fills but no more diagnostic ì\npottery was recovered.\n\n[See also: general entry for rescue excavations at Sites C (C1-4, ì\nC5), D, E and F (AIP record E.80.0003); separate entries for ì\nexcavations at Sites D, E and F (AIP records E.80.0005 - 0007); and\nentries for subsequent salvage recording (AIP records E.80.???? - ????).] |
