Abstract:
The proposed residential development at Priory Street was bounded to the east by Garden Street, to the south by Priory Street, and to the north and west by residential plots. An archaeological watching brief was carried out at the site in April 2006 during the excavation of strip footings, service trenches and associated ground reduction prior to the construction of 5 residential 3-storey town houses. Up to 600mm of mixed overburden was identified, beneath which a number of stratigraphically sealed archaeological features and deposits were recorded. Most notable were three probable rubbish pits, containing what appeared to be domestic refuse, and securely dated to the 12th and 13th centuries. It was suggested that these features may have related, directly or indirectly, to the large Cluniac Priory founded and built in the second half of the 11th century, the ruins of which lay directly to the south. Some post-medieval features and structures were also recorded within the footprint of the recently demolished building. Furthermore, it seemed likely that a number of undated pits exposed in the narrow strip footings also had the potential to be of medieval origin. [Au]
