Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during soil stripping along the line of a new access road, and within the footprint of a former greenhouse at the centre of a development site. Earlier evaluation of the area had revealed a number of dispersed features ranging in date from the Mesolithic or Early Neolithic to the early post-medieval period. During the watching brief, two gullies and two pits were recorded along the line of the road. One of the pits contained a sherd of Bronze Age pottery and numerous fragments of charcoal. The other three features did not contain dateable finds, but their fills were similar to that of the Bronze Age pit, indicating that these were also of probable Bronze Age date. Stray finds were recovered, including a sherd of late medieval pottery, two fragments of medieval tile and fragments of burnt flint. No features or artefacts of archaeological interest were recorded within the footprint of the greenhouse, where evaluation trenches had also produced a negative result. [AIP] |
