Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment and archaeological evaluation were undertaken as part of a planning condition on the construction of residential properties and a public library. The desk-based assessment revealed that the site lay within the historic late Saxon and medieval core of Hertford, forming part of the waterfront which may have been occupied since the earliest periods of the town's history. Early maps demonstrated that the area was built up in the 17th century, and contained buildings associated with the malting industry in the 19th century. The origins of the layout of the Dolphin Yard/Adams Yard property boundaries were clearly early, and were shown on maps dating as far back as the early 19th century, though less traceable before this. The site included a large part of the former Dolphin Yard tenement plot, and also the northern section of the former Adam's Yard tenement plot. Dolphin Yard derived it's name from the former Glove and Dolphin public house which was situated close by on the Maidenhead Street frontage (and was first recorded in the early part of the 17th century). The evaluation revealed small-scale evidence of 'back-yard' occupation dating as far back as the Saxo-Norman and High Medieval periods, after which there seemed to have been an abandonment of the area and the accumulation of a variably deep, sterile layer of dark loamy soil during the later medieval period. Thereafter the site appeared to have been mainly undeveloped until the 18th and 19th centuries, with the construction of a large maltings and ancillary buildings on the site. The footprint of the maltings building had survived, as had that of the subsequent light manufacturing building recently demolished as part of the current redevelopment. No peat deposits were recorded on the site, though alluvium was present in the northern third of the area. Further south, a ridge of terrace gravel was present, dropping off slightly further towards Maidenhead Street. Medieval features continued into the areas of alluvium in the northern part of the site, proving the accessibility of this area by this time, and little evidence of land reclamation deposits was recorded.
