Due to current defects in the surfacing of the main road through Warkworth, Northumberland County Council were in the process of designing a scheme for the comprehensive relaying of this road. Archaeological test trenching was carried out. Three evaluation trenches, each 6m long by 1m to 1.5m wide were opened along the main thoroughfare of the village in Castle Street and Bridge Street. All trenches were excavated to a maximum depth of 0.6m, in line with the likely maximum depth of any road refurbishment. A substantial road surface formed of whinstone penning, directly below the current tarmac road surface, was seen in trenches 1 and 2. There was no evidence for an equivalent whinstone penning surface in trench 3, which did, however, contain an early tarmac surface and a possible road surface of crushed red sandstone beneath this. Deposits beneath the whinstone surface in trench 2 were badly disturbed by service trenches, but within trench 1, a truncated sandstone wall was revealed, which ran parallel with the current frontages but some 2.3m further into the thoroughfare. A probable foundation cut in front of this wall contained three sherds of pottery dateable from the 12th to mid 13th century. The interpretation of the sandstone wall in trench 1 as a possible component of the high medieval frontage of the road running through at least the northern portion of the village of Warkworth was of considerable historical and archaeological significance for the understanding of the development of the village. The discovery added to the present body of historical knowledge suggesting the antiquity of the street pattern through the settlement, and suggested that a considerable archaeological resource may have been present beneath modern and 19th century road deposits.
