Abstract:
Proposals prepared to enable repairs to the Castle Keep identified a need for the insertion of ground anchors to provide stability for the scaffolding. In view of this it was felt to be important to establish the extent and nature of sub-surface archaeology around the keep. The first stage of this was the execution of a ground penetrating radar survey. Three trial trenches were then excavated in order to clarify the results from the GPR survey, and test the physical character of the positions of some of the ground anchors. The main positive outcome of the trenching was the support it gave for the interpretation of the radar survey as indicating an encircling foundation trench to the 12th century keep. It did not confirm the presence of an offset foundation to the keep, although the radar survey indicated that this may have lain at depths greater than those exposed by the excavation. None of the trenches contained fragmented foundations, nor did they reveal the presence of any previously unsuspected walls. The effect on discussion of the existence and location of the postulated shell keep and the sheriff's hall and chamber of 1246 was, therefore, neutral. It did, however, seem probable that the present ground level was reasonably close to that of the medieval period, and that undisturbed medieval layers lay just below the tarmac surface, emphasising the archaeological sensitivity of the area.
