Abstract:
Excavations were undertaken to further investigate areas of archaeological potential identified during evaluation on land proposed for development at Welwyn Hall. Three areas were investigated. A number of features in all areas were tentatively dated as representing pre 1st-2nd century activity, and a boundary ditch cut in area A was shown to have been ceased to be maintained during the 1st-2nd century. Further investigation in area B of a possible mausoleum structure revealed that the structure was well preserved and intact. The excavation re-affirmed the absence of a boundary or 'precinct ditch' recorded to the north and west of the mausoleum in 1976-77, and the three burials aligned east/west (previously thought to lie within the 'precinct ditch') were shown to be part of a 4th centruy cemetery which post-dated the demolition of the mausoleum. Although the function of the building remained unclear, features such as an east/west alignment, and apse to the east, a central cellar, and ambulatory or walkway, a squared niche for a shrine suggested a religious function. The presence of plastered walls, arched entrances and opus signium floor also suggested a high status building. Later features identified included a line of seven postholes representing the vestiges of a boundary fence line of post-medieval date. [AIP]
