Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an extension to a car park and storage area identified that it lay directly to the east of one of a group of Scheduled Bronze Age bowl barrows, and that the nearby High Street followed the line of the London to Brighton Roman road. Further archaeological sites recorded in the surrounding area included the findspots of Mesolithic flint flakes and Roman pottery, the earthwork remains of a medieval moated homestead, the site of a post-medieval flour mill and a post-medieval firestone and hearthstone quarry. Cartographic evidence indicated that the site had previously been used as arable land. The majority of the site had probably been disturbed to an unknown degree by levelling, so that any archaeological evidence which may have been present would have been compromised. It was nonetheless concluded that the site had a high archaeological potential, and that trial trenching should be underaken. [AIP] |
