Abstract: |
An archaeological field evaluation was carried out in advance of proposed extension and alteration work to an existing building. Three trenches were excavated in the courtyard to the rear of the 1828 extension. These revealed that the 1824 Council House had been built partially occupying the footings of either the 1704 Council House or the 1675 terraced house previously occupying this spot. Further walls belonging to these properties were encountered, as well as a sequence of mortared floors, a brick yard surface and compacted clay surfaces over which wooden floors may have been suspended. Disturbed remains dating from the 19th century and earlier produced finds of a range of dates including pottery from the medieval period. Stratified medieval layers were not encountered due to the depth of post-medieval deposits. [Au(adp)] |
