Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a cemetery, which lay within an area where a high density of archaeological remains dating from the Mesolithic to early medieval times had been recorded. As a result of a geophysical survey carried out prior to the evaluation, some of the proposed trench locations were modified. During the evaluation several features were recorded, including a pit containing Mid-Iron Age and other prehistoric pottery, and a small ditch or gully containing Iron Age pottery. A large area of burnt flint was interpreted as the probable remains of a burnt mound. Possible Bronze Age and possible medieval pottery was recovered. It was concluded that the prehistoric features probably indicated areas peripheral to a settlement, occupied by fields and paddocks. A number of struck flints were dated to the Mesolithic or Early Neolithic. [AIP] |
