Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed development. No previous archaeological work had been carried out on the site. The site lay on the western boundary of an Area of Archaeological Value. The assessment indicated that there was the potential for undisturbed pockets of archaeology to have survived in the area of the development, including deposits relating to the Roman camp immediately to the west and the Roman Road which crossed the site. There was also the potential for chance finds from the Anglo-Saxon and medieval, however, it was likely that up until the late 18th century the site had been either uncultivated, cultivated or pasture land. The survival potential of archaeological remains from the prehistoric to the early post-medieval periods was limited by the development of the site during the 19th and 20th centuries. Geo-technical investigations had revealed that deep foundations and cellars existed in some areas of the site. However, there was a central zone across the site which had remained undeveloped throughout the history of the site. [Au(abr)] |
