Abstract:
The assessment was undertaken following a planning application for the erection of 32 dwellings with associated car parking. The archaeological record contained no direct evidence of any archaeological surviving on the site, which was clearly well to the south-east of the main focus of Roman and medieval Erith. Early maps showed many shallow clay or sand quarries in the immediate area and strongly indicated that the application site occupied one of these. The borehole and trial pit data totally supported this information for the whole site contained deep layers of fill to a depth on nearly 5m. Undisturbed natural soils were normally located at a depth on 0.5-1m in the West Street area and very clearly this was not the case on the application site. There could be very little doubt that it sat entirely within an early quarry that was subsequently filled with building debris including mixed soils and some light rubble. There seemed no scope for making archaeological discoveries here due to the fact that the site had been very substantially reduced, mostly by 3-5m, and thus any archaeological stratigraphy, features and artefacts which might have existed would have been totally destroyed. Hence there was no need for prior archaeological trenching nor for a watching brief during the early phases of construction. [Au(abr)]
