Abstract:
A watching brief was maintained during groundwork associated with the construction of a detached timber framed garage. The groundwork comprised of the excavation, by mechanical excavator, of a c.10m long, 1m wide, retaining wall foundation trench (T1) and a two structural wall foundation trenches c.10m long and 5m long (T2 & T3). T1 ran parallel to the present day track. A layer of metalling was exposed at the eastern end comprising of a thin (100mm) layer of chalk overlain by a thick (280mm) layer of brick fragments and cinder, in turn overlain by a thick (200mm) layer of gravely topsoil. Below the metalling, a clay alluvial deposit was exposed. At the western end of the trench a small cinder layer was exposed, presumably also representing the remains of road metalling. T2 ran northwards from the western end of T1. At the northern end a brick filled soakaway was exposed. At the southern end a very vague cut was exposed, possibly representing a drainage gully associated with the track. The trench cut through a 0.75m thick alluvial deposit resting on natural chalk bedrock. T3, running eastward from the northern end of T2, exposed no archaeological features and again cut through a 0.75m thick layer of alluvial deposit resting on chalk. No archaeological artefacts were recovered from the trenches or spoil heap. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd edition Ordnance Survey maps record the area of the development as being open fields, however, by the 1920s the track had come into existence and the bricks used in the metalling layer would support this date for this feature. The soakaway was also likely to have dated to this period or later. [Au(adp)]
