Abstract:
The evaluation revealed a continuation of archaeological deposits dating from the late Saxon through to the early post-medieval period. The earliest feature was a possible linear ditch at the front of the site orientated east-west and producing probable 11th century pottery, while two further 11th or 12th century linear ditch features similarly orientated and parallel to one another, were observed to the rear or west of the site. The walled remains of a probable 12/13th century stone building and possible boundary wall were recorded in plan a few metres north of the 9th century ditch. Although this building and wall were only partially uncovered, residual finds within the associated thick demolition layer suggests construction and occupation of the building from the 12/13th century with abandonment appearing to have occurred during the early post-medieval period. In addition to these features, two former roads, consisting of angular fragments of limestone in a roughly constructed cobbled surface, were also exposed. Stone surfaces were revealed in three areas. The extent and general alignment of two of these exposed surfaces points to a single road across the centre of the site, generally orientated east to west and approximately 6/8m wide. The north edge of a second slightly truncated stone road was partially exposed on the extreme south side of the site, extending south for a distance of 6m/ Although the construction of these roads remains undated finds recovered from material overlying their surfaces and therefore associated with their use suggests usage from 12/13th continuing up until the early post-medieval period.
