Abstract: An archaeological evaluation, comprising a desk-based assessment and field evaluation, was undertaken on the site of a proposed new community centre. Abbots Langley had produced evidence for scattered occupation during the prehistoric and Roman period, but was not recorded historically until at least the early 11th century. The town had since expanded from its original medieval core and was now a major commuter town. The assessment area lay to the west of the medieval centre of the village and was situated on the site of the manor house, which was demolished in 1953. The former house was occupied from at least the 17th century, though it may have been located on an earlier moated manorial site predating the construction of the building. The field evaluation revealed foundation walls and demolition layers from the manor house, preserving the remains of an in-filled cellar with a door aperture and possible window. There were no dateable finds, though the style, fabric and bondwork of the brick walling was consistent with the 17th century date ascribed to the former buildings on the site. A second trench revealed traces of a probable cobbled surface reflecting the line of the late 19th century pathway/drive of the manor house, over which a garden or make-up soil layer had been deposited. A small ditch or garden feature had later been dug through the layer, which had itself been infilled at the time the house was demolished. Three residual fragments of Roman flat tile were recovered from a hardcore layer below the cobbled pathway, indicative of a Roman presence in the area, though not in their original context of deposition.
