Abstract:
A watching brief was maintained along the route of a pipeline which crossed four sites of archaeological interest recorded on the County SMR. These comprised two cropmark sites, an area of banks forming trackways and rectangular enclosures, and the site of a possible Deserted Medieval Village. Further sites had been recorded in the vicinity of the pipeline. During the watching brief, several archaeological features were identified. These included a post-medieval field boundary ditch associated with drainage and cultivation features, and an area of ridge and furrow, possibly dating back to the medieval period. At one of the cropmark sites, visible earthworks were encountered. These were bisected by the pipeline, to reveal an area of possible medieval quarrying, the remains of a drystone wall, a trackway, a lynchet and a further ditch. Elsewhere, an undated wall corresponded roughly with the postulated boundary of the Deserted Medieval Village. Animal bones and medieval and post-medieval pottery were recovered during the watching brief. [AIP]
